Using Hyperterminal To Download PAT Tester

If you experience problems when downloading your PAT Tester to SimplyPats, it is possible to try and download your PAT Tester to your PC using Hyperterminal. Hyperterminal is a small program part of your Windows operating system, it comes free as an added extra with all versions of Microsoft Windows.

On XP machines this can normally be found under Accessories, Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > HyperTerminal.
If you are running Windows Vista, you may not have HyperTerminal, in this case you can download it from the Internet or from the SimplyPats web site.

1) Run HyperTerminal

2) Click Yes when asked if you want to make HyperTerminal your default telnet program.

3) Type in a name for your new connection, for example, Test.
Click OK to continue.

4) Choose a COM port to use, and make sure your PAT Tester is plugged into that COM port.

If no COM ports are listed, then there are no free COM ports on your PC or there may be a hardware/software issue, please consult your IT Technician. Press OK to continue.

5) Settings should be as follows:

Bits per second: 9600 (this is the baud rate, please set this to the same rate as shown on your PAT)
Data bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop bits: 1
Flow control: None

Note, these setting depend on which PAT Tester you are attempting to download. You may need to refer to the manual that came with your PAT Tester to check you have the correct settings.

6) You should now see the above screen.

7) If you want to capture the data recovered to a file, click on the Transfer Menu

8) Select the Capture Text menu option, and the following dialogue will appear.

Enter the filename and place that you want to save the output text file.

9) On your PAT Tester, start the download as normal.

10) If your PAT has successfully downloaded, you should see the data, as shown above.
